In this freewheeling take on The Devil and Daniel Webster, a mediocre writer who craves literary success and fame makes the diabolical deal. After the bargain is struck, his books sell by the millions despite being even worse than before. The plot is predictable with scenes worthy of a made-for-TV movie, but an outstanding cast raises the production to a higher level than the screenplay deserves: Alec Baldwin, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Anthony Hopkins, Dan Aykroyd, and Kim Cattrall hold the viewer’s interest all the way to the end.
