This feature translates Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility into fluent Latinx, with the rigid class structure of 18th-century Britain replaced by the ethnic mosaic of 21st-century Los Angeles. Two twenty-something sisters have enjoyed posh and privileged lives in a palatial Beverly Hills mansion since birth. Although of Mexican descent, they have little awareness of their heritage, no knowledge of its history and customs, and they don’t even speak Spanish. When their father dies, his secret overwhelming debt comes crashing down on them, and they’re forced to sell everything, including their home. A kind relative in east L.A. takes them into her crowded household, and there they get a crash course in Mexican-American culture.
