The heroine of this story is repeatedly reincarnated to succumb again and again to a hopeless romantic fixation. In the 17th century she catches sight of a rogue who’s about to be publicly executed and instantly falls in love with him. When she makes a mad dash to stop the proceedings, her recklessness gets her killed in a freak accident. Successive eras find her chasing the same man in various circumstances, each time failing both in love and life. Not only is she fated to die for love again and again, but she’s condemned to adopt the hairstyles and wigs of whatever era she enters. The story is quirky, confusing (in a good way), and full of sardonic humor, and the cinematography – in particular, the use of color – adds a curiously mesmerizing effect. Fans of romantic-death comedies should not miss this one.
