At a university with a robust quantum-physics program, a professor and a student discover a way to send email to recipients in the past. Their messages make changes in the present that they didn’t expect or want, and sending more messages to correct their mistakes only makes things worse. Central to the plot is the professor’s love for his wife and his desire to erase an unfortunate event from her life. Although this feature is advertised as a romance, there’s precious little typical romantic activity: this is a tale of grim determination to make a loved one’s life better at any cost.
