· Voodoo Macbeth · by Abebe & Alonso-Berbel ☼ online event
Details
This feature tells the true story of Shakespeare’s Macbeth performed by an all-Black cast in 1936. Under a New Deal program to support arts organizations, the funding of this project by the Negro Theater Unit in Harlem was controversial, and complications arose as efforts to attract and retain suitable actors and crew floundered. The most serious obstacle to the play’s success was the obsessive and superstitious nature of its young first-time director: Orson Welles. The screenplay is derived from actual events as recalled by ten directors, eight writers, and three producers who either contributed to or witnessed the production.
