The title character is an alien resembling a Black man (albeit with somewhat irregular feet) who has crash-landed on Earth. He finds himself stranded in New York City and tries to find safe haven in Harlem. The plot is an allegory for the immigrant experience in the USA. It may be even more relevant today than it was when first released, especially when a couple of alien bounty hunters arrive with the intention of capturing him and deporting him back to his home planet.
