Defeating Physical Security with Physics

Details

A bit of a late entry, but we welcome you to join us at Rack59 or online!

Join us Wednesday, 15 September 2021 at 1130 at Rack 59 data center (7725 West Reno Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73127) for our speaker Jordan Caldwell from Critical Fault LLC. Jordan will be speaking on physical security. Join us for food and door prizes.

Intro:
Too often, physical security is seen as a physical barrier that requires brute force to penetrate. A field that is protected by thick steel and "fancy" locks. The consequences of having the physical realm covertly penetrated tend to be ignored. It is not a scarcity that access to the digital realm can be achieved through direct physical means. Worse, physical breaches often go long periods without being noticed.

With this discussion, I plan to show how the use of physics can be harnessed to overcome several common physical barriers using readily accessible means, and how access can be exploited once inside. Barriers to be defeated will include those overcome by simple "picking", manipulating radio frequencies, copying RFID and physical keys in the field, implementing man-in-the-middle attacks, and exploiting elevators and the physical barriers regulated by fire code.

Finally, we'll discuss strategies to protect your organization from these hidden and easily accessible risks.

Jordans Bio:

Jordan serves as the Chief Strategy Officer and will be performing risk assessments, physical security testing, and assisting with overall growth and development of the company. He has his Bachelor of Science in medical physics, which included a broad range of subjects including mathematics, chemistry, biology, and electronics. For the past eight and a half years, Jordan has served as a risk assessor for Oklahoma State Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

Jordan wrote and reviewed environmental and nuclear safety reports, was a project manager and technical supervisor, and conducted physical and compliance inspections of facilities that use licensed nuclear material. Jordan is attending certification classes in physical security by industry experts.
