This is a 79-mile section hike of the last portion of the Colorado Trail. This hike is at altitude and not a first-time hike if you have not hiked at altitude before. The daily mileage is relatively low, about 10 miles a day which we will adjust as needed. This is a beautiful section of the Colorado Trail. We will take the train in from Durango and get dropped off at Elk Park. From Elk Park we will start hiking toward the terminus of the trail just outside Durango. Please ensure you arrive in Durango on 15 July. We will take the train at 0815 on 16 July. You will need to be at the train station 30 minutes before departure to drop off your pack. We will not re-supply so you will need fuel and food for 7-8 days.
Driving to Durango from San Antonio is about a 15-hour drive. I will be flying into Durango and flying home. Once we get a little closer to the trip, we will have a video call to sort through carpooling options for those that choose to drive.
15 July - travel to Durango
16 July - train to Elk Park, start of hike
23 July - finish hike at Durango Trailhead
24 July - travel home
The train ticket is $120 plus $25 for your backpack. You will need to check the refund policy before booking your ticket. I will book my ticket tomorrow, 31 March. Please try and book your ticket sooner rather than later as the first train of the day does tend to fill quickly. Please book a seat for a gondola car. The train does have food and drinks available for sale during the ride out. I will contact everyone that signs up for the trip to discuss trip details. Everyone will be required to sign a liability waiver. I will sign one as well.
