Maria Wulf, hailing from the small town of Aberdeen, Washington, discovered her passion for drums at a young age, later falling in love with jazz during high school after attending the Bud Shank Jazz Workshop in Port Townsend, Washington. There, she studied under jazz luminaries like Jeff Hamilton, Larance Marable, and Frankie Capp, sparking her desire to pursue a career in jazz and forging connections with key players in the Northwest music scene. Her music scholarships took her to Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon, where she thrived in the jazz band and vocal jazz group Genesis, studying under Dave Barduhn and local drummer Chris Condrad. Maria’s journey continued at the University of North Texas, where she earned a degree in jazz studies and mentored under Ed Soph, Dr. Robert Schietroma, and Ron Fink, while performing with groups like the Dallas Jazz Orchestra and the Richardson Symphony. After relocating to the Pacific Northwest in 2000, Maria quickly reintegrated into the Seattle music scene, gaining recognition as an excellent sight reader and educator, performing with notable big bands such as the Emerald City Jazz Orchestra and Jim Cutler Jazz Orchestra. A sought-after adjudicator and mentor, Maria also contributed to KPLU’s School of Jazz and recorded on several of its volumes. Returning to school in 2003, she earned a degree in Music Education and a Masters in Percussion Performance from the University of Washington, and was selected for the Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Combo, performing at prestigious venues like the Kennedy Center and IAJE conference in New York. As an educator, Maria has taught a wide range of music classes at all levels, served as adjunct faculty at several local colleges, and directed the Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra for six years. Today, she continues to perform up and down the I-5 corridor, from Seattle to Portland, sharing her deep passion for jazz with audiences and students alike.
