Opposed in their methodology, data science and the humanities appear to be disjointed approaches to study information. Humanities are rooted in deciphering and recording the human experience, while data science is built upon analytical practices used in statistics, mathematics, and computer science. Still, what if combining these practices enhanced their shared outcome of maximizing the value of information? Humanists now experiment with machine learning to research massive corpuses. And as Data scientists continue to face complications due to the ethical practices of their work, employing humanities thought processes may save the future of their industry.

Anna Krause is a junior undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln working on data analysis with historic documents. She is a History major with minors in Computer Science, Digital Humanities, and English. She is currently working as an undergraduate research assistant on the nationally funded Digital Humanities project, “O Say Can You See, Early Washington, D.C., Law & Family.” Anna has professional experience as a past intern on Mutual of Omaha’s Decision Science team and at The Willa Cather Archive. After graduation she hopes to work as a data analyst or junior data scientist, live in a grungy apartment with exposed brick, and eventually pursue a graduate degree.
