What we’re about
Foundations Classical Academy (FCA) was founded in 2023 by an instructor with a Ph.D. and 20 years of teaching experience. We offer high-quality, rigorous, facts-based, mastery-oriented online courses in the classical liberal arts to children and adults. While we do not support the use of artificial intelligence among students, teaching-to-the test, or any sort of indoctrination,* we do make use of different types of new technologies and creative techniques to facilitate student learning and increase motivation and interest. If you are looking for a course that is not currently offered, please let us know! Some of our previous course offerings have included ELA, Spanish, Introduction to Classical Studies, Basic Latin, Vocabulary from Greek and Latin Roots, Adapted Classics, Penmanship Improvement and Cursive Handwriting for Teens, World Geography, Study Skills, and U.S. History and Government.
Meetup members and organizers need to be at least 18 years old. While family groups are more than welcome on Meetup, anyone under the age of 18 attending an event must be accompanied by an adult.
* FCA sometimes offers courses to Christian students that take a Christian focus to curricula; however, these courses are geared to students already being brought up in the Christian faith. In more general courses, FCA takes a neutral position on religious matters and does not promote any sort of ideology in the classroom.
ADAPTED CLASSICS: The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Greek History
Course description: The purpose of this course is to spark pre-teen/early teenage students' interest in reading classic books and to teach them to engage in Socratic discussion about themes, characters, plot, etc. Parts of the books will be read aloud; others will be left for the students to read on their own. We will also focus on history related to the stories. Our summer 2025 readings are selections from Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey. Although all editions are adapted to younger readers, some books contain references to violence, death, and so on. Please preview the books to make sure the themes are appropriate for your child. As different books will be read in future terms, students may repeat the course many times. Recommended for students ages 10-13. This course is graded based on attendance, preparation, and participation.

Course description: Many students today lack the ability to take notes quickly or even sign their name because they have never studied cursive or were only offered a short tutorial on this type of writing during their grammar school years. Our reliance on computer technology for writing purposes has further eroded writing skills in both print and script. Yet neat penmanship is essential for good note-taking and communicating our thoughts clearly to others in written form. Writing neatly by hand, furthermore, involves the creation of beauty and develops a student's patience and discipline in doing so. In this live online course, we improve our print and cursive handwriting through reading and writing about people and events from American history as well as drawing them. Why drawing? Drawing develops some of the same muscle groups used for handwriting. It's also lots of fun! Recommended for ages 11-18. An ADULT SECTION is also available.
