Announcing a new Meetup for Onyx (Bay Area Black Professionals)!

What: 2009 Career Day Initial Steering Committee Conference Call

When: December 12,[masked]:30 PM

Where: (A location has not been chosen yet.)

Meetup Description: FROM LATOYA:

WHEN: Friday, 12/12/08 @ 7:30pm
WHERE: Conference Call
COST: Free
TOPIC: Brainstorm discussion on ideas (logistics & speakers) for a Career Day targeting youth, scheduled for February 2009

IMPORTANT: To RSVP, please send La Toya a message

I've noticed that there are many at risk youth whom either don't have career goals or don't believe they are capable of achieving their career goals. In response, I have a very strong interest in philantrophic opportunities that involve bettering our black community, beginning with our at risk youth (e.g Black,
Mexican, Asian, etc.)

I want to organize a Career Day for kids (age 11 -17)

To encourage black youth to start thinking about their their career goals before they graduate from college.
Optional - each of these black professionals would be matched up with a youth sharing a similar career goal. This could potentially create a mentorship relationship.

1 to 2 hours of your volunteer efforts as a Guest Speaker on 1 Saturday in the month of February 2009 (black history month).
For the Career Day, you voluntarily will present to the youth your career highlights, professional /academic history, career choice and provide advice as to what they can do in their career.

My interest is local community outreach because I grew up in a single parent household and was poor. My passion is to positively impact youth so that they can be resilient and conquer crisis, adversity and various objections like I did. I've coordinated 2 consecutive career days targeting youth in partnership with National Society for Black Engineers and Women For Positive Communication.

If you are interested in volunteering as a Guest Speaker at this 2009 Career Day (in February 2009) then please let me know asap.
