Tired of being locked-in to proprietary desktop GIS? Want more flexibility, features, and style in your web-based maps than proprietary APIs provide?
Come talk about all things GIS/mapping and the intersection with free and open source software!
We'll discuss OpenStreetMap (http://www.openstreetmap.org), the free global map that everyone can edit and use with minimal restrictions, and the FOSS (free and open-source software) GIS stack: including PostGIS (http://postgis.refractions.net/), MapServer (http://mapserver.org/), GeoServer (http://geoserver.org), TileStache (http://tilestache.org/), QGIS (http://www.qgis.org/), GRASS (http://grass.osgeo.org/), GDAL (http://www.gdal.org/), and more.
These tools enable you to analyze and query geographic data, retrieve directions from one place to another, make and design maps, and more.
Open to those with all levels of experience. Laptops are encouraged but not required.
Rough agenda:
Lightning talks on Editing OSM; visualizing your runs/bicycling trips; FOSS Geo Stack Building, and more. Brainstorming and future topics Head to a bar/restaurant afterwards to continue the conversation, (optional :) Want to give a lightning talk (a brief 5-8 minute presentation) about a related topic? The Cleveland OSM/FOSS GIS Group aims to be a resource for people to discuss and share knowledge on utilizing free geographic data sets especially OpenStreetMap, and free, open-source software that manages, edits, and displays geographic data, and advocate for its use in Northeast Ohio.
