What we're about

#ODSC brings together the data science community with the goal of helping its members learn and network around the latest topics and trends in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

We are looking for volunteers and contributors in Madrid to help grow the community. ODSC will host speakers, food, and a venue if necessary. Many of our top volunteers get an all expenses paid trip to ODSC data science conferences in either London, San Francisco, Boston or other events. If you are interested in helping out, please click here ( https://goo.gl/forms/jYViH8Nezy45MADu2 ).

Who is this meetup for?

• Data Scientist, Data engineers, analysts, and other data practitioners

• Software engineers, software architects and other looking to implement machine learning in their code

• Non-technical team leads, executives, and other decision makers

Intro-Face Processing w/ Comp. Vision&Containerizing/Scaling Luigi in Kubernetes

This meetup is supported by Giphy. Schedule: 6:00pm - 6:30pm - ODSC Intro, Pizzas & Refreshments. 7:30pm - 7:10pm - Speaker One and Q&A 7:10 - 7:50 - Speaker Two and Q&A 7:50 - 8:10 - Networking Speaker#1: Gabriel Bianconi, Founder of Scalar Research https://www.linkedin.com/in/gabrielbianconi Topic: Introduction to Face Processing with Computer Vision Bio: Gabriel is the founder of Scalar Research, artificial intelligence & data science consulting firm. Scalar helps companies tackle complex business challenges with data-driven solutions leveraging cutting-edge machine learning and advanced analytics. Previously, Gabriel was a B.S. & M.S. student in computer science at Stanford, where he conducted research on computer vision, deep learning, and quantum computing. He's also spent time at Google, Facebook, startups, and investment firms. Abstract: Ever wonder how Facebook’s facial recognition or Snapchat’s filters work? Faces are a fundamental piece of photography, and building applications around them has never been easier with open-source libraries and pre-trained models. In this talk, we’ll help you understand some of the computer vision and machine learning techniques behind these applications. Then, we’ll use this knowledge to develop our own prototypes to tackle tasks such as face detection (e.g. digital cameras), recognition (e.g. Facebook Photos), classification (e.g. identifying emotions), manipulation (e.g. Snapchat filters), and more. Speaker#2: Walter Menendez, Senior Data Engineer at GIPHY Topic: Luigi the 10x Plumber: Containerizing & Scaling Luigi in Kubernetes Bio: Walter Menendez is a Senior Data Engineer at GIPHY, based in New York. At GIPHY, he is responsible for the development and maintenance of all of GIPHY's data pipelines, including on-site impression collection, data warehousing, and search indexing. Formerly at BuzzFeed, Walter spent three years there optimizing the internal data warehousing ecosystem, empowering the analytical approach that BuzzFeed uses for the content creation cycle. Walter studied at MIT where he earned a BS in Computer Science and Engineering. Abstract: We love data because it lets us make data-driven decisions that improve the quality of results our users get from our search engine. Recently, Giphy moved their Luigi pipelines from legacy infrastructure on managed AWS EC2 instances to a new containerized ecosystem inside of Kubernetes to increase the overall latency of our most critical ETLs. In this talk, Walter will share the exact limitations of Giphy's old infrastructure, how they identified these bottlenecks, and how decided to overhaul their system as they containerized it. Additionally, the speaker will cover how they redesigned Luigi pipelines to work around its core limitations while maximizing its strengths.
