What we’re about
So glad you're here!
Open Floor San Diego is a local group to connect with the practice of Open Floor, a global conscious dance/movement modality.
We engage embodied movement and dance to foster authenticity, emotional intelligence, and connection.
On the Open Floor, we don’t learn to dance; we dance to learn - employing dance, movement, and guided reflection as a form of meditation, inquiry and discovery. There are no steps to follow, no performance, no “right or wrong” — just showing up.
Open Floor is a resource-based movement practice. We explore new ways of moving and responding to life with intention and curiosity. As we play with different movement options, we learn more about our patterns and expand our capacity for flexibility, resilience, choice, and ease — both on and off the dance floor.
We are an inclusive space, honoring all bodies, lineages, and paces. Chairs are available in the movement space for sitting as desired. To support accessibility and community care, we offer a three-tier sliding scale for classes and workshops - no explanation needed.
Shelley Kilcoyne, our local facilitator, completed a two-year Open Floor teacher training with OFI in 2015/16 and has been practicing and teaching the modality since. She is excited to bring the practice to San Diego through weekly classes, workshops, and events. Shelley holds space with integrity, tenderness, and respect for each person’s freedom of expression, and brings her experience as a holistic therapist and somatic practitioner to support a trauma-aware, inclusive environment. She loves how Open Floor makes embodiment accessible to all and values the potency of gathering in community (our saving grace!).
Come as you are. Move, breathe, sweat, soften, shake, grieve, celebrate, rest, reconnect — your way, at your pace. We look forward to moving and being moved together, co-creating a dynamic Open Floor community in San Diego.
