Join Orlando Devs to create community impact with technology

Join our hackathon kickoff on 9/17 and hear from Central Florida housing leaders, and Orlando Devs hackathon leaders and collaborators. You'll be introduced to the problem and given all the tools you'll need to get started. This event is open to coders and non-coders alike, and there will be a way for everyone to participate!
Tentative kickoff program

  • Doors: 6:30 pm
  • Programming: 7-8:30 pm
  • Networking: 8:30-9 pm

Background
Availability and accessibility of affordable housing is a national problem. In Central Florida, this need is particularly acute - Orlando is the second-worst market for available affordable housing in the United States.
Per the Central Florida Foundation:

  • Almost 48% of people in the Orlando metro spend more than 30% of their income on housing, with some spending up to 50%. This leaves many precariously housed and one emergency away from losing their home, and
  • More than 1,500 people moving to the region every week

Many organizations working to combat the housing crises lack data and technology tools - and the tools they do have are manual, time consuming, open to human error. Yet, if these data and technology gaps are closed, housing actors can better determine if local housing programs and policies are reaching their intended goals, report on impact, hold local leaders accontable, and direct appropriate resources - in the appropriate fashion - to communities in need of support.
Orlando Devs is teaming up with local housing actors and nonprofits to contribute our developer and analysis skills toward solving the problem. From September 17th - November 2nd, we'll be working on this challenge together in person and remotely. We're aligning our efforts to Hacktoberfest - a monthlong celebration of open source projects - a chance to give back to our communities, sharpening our skills, and making open solutions accessible and impactful.
There are opportunities for coders and non-coders alike!
We're looking for creative ideas, shared experiences of housing challenges, deep dives into data, digital storytelling, and more.

Orlando Devs will end Hacktoberfest with a day-long hackathon on 11/2. You do not need to attend this event to participate in the hackathon, and you can join the Hacktoberfest activities at any point in the month. We're glad to have you!
