Hey everyone, it was great to see so many people from this DIYbio Vancouver Meetup group come visit us at this years Mini Maker Faire. Thank you for dropping by our table and checking us out. Erik and I were off our feet virtually the whole time talking with you and the general public about DIYbio.

Our "One Minute DNA Extraction" method proved super popular with everyone from little kids (Erik got some awesome video of swishing dances from a couple younger DIY biologists) to eighty year old DIY biologists. Great to see the expression's on people's faces when they saw their own DNA for the first time in their lives.

For those who weren't able to make it to our table here is the "One Minute DNA Extraction" method. No special lab equipment needed!

1) Spit - a tablespoon is fine, scrape your tongue for more DNA
2) Add a drop or two of dish soap
3) Swirl to mix
4) Pour in some rubbing alcohol (isopropanol from London Drugs)
5) Watch your DNA precipitate out as you mix.

We had a wide range of people coming to talk with us. It was great to see so many people with an interest in biology.

To keep up the momentum for building our local community, Erik and I are working on a series of workshops. The first workshop will teach DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis. It should be ready in a month or two. It would be great if anyone has some pipettes to loan. We have a couple sets but could use some more. Keep an eye on this Meetup for more information.

We have been invited by an organizer to this August's Hacked Festival so we are looking into that. Of course, being an open group we would love to get some help on organizing that if it comes to pass. The Maker Faire was quite spontaneous and a low key but excellent start. Hope to see you in the future.
