Wroclaw Open Source Meetup #12

Details

The Wrocław Open Source Meetup is back for its 12th iteration. Prepare for a state of the art open source galore and meet us for two technical presentations and a Q&A session, followed by an after party for all your socializing and networking needs.
Join us at the Wrocław Open Source Meetup #12 at Concordia Hub on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023.

Agenda:

1. DigitalJS: a visual graphical circuit simulator; Marek Materzok, The University of Wroclaw

Digital circuit design is now more accessible than ever. Availability of FPGAs and free/open implementations of hardware design languages means that the line between hardware and software becomes blurred. It makes sense to teach digital design to computer science students, so that they may later become professionals with a good understanding of both hardware and software. However, the hardware world differs from software in many non-obvious ways, which makes hardware design non-intuitive for software developers.

I present DigitalJS, a tool for visualizing and simulating digital hardware specified using Verilog and SystemVerilog hardware design languages. By clearly presenting the correspondence of Verilog code with the generated circuit diagram, it helps understand the essentials of digital design. The tool is used with great success to teach digital design fundamentals to computer science students at University of Wrocław.

2. Open source, CI-driven flow for hardware design with photorealistic visualizations; Wojciech Gryncewicz, Antmicro

During this talk, we will discuss some of the designs open sourced by Antmicro, challenges tied to publishing physical objects in repositories, and design choices involved in the process. We will talk about our open source toolkit consisting of tools like KiCad and Blender complimented by scripts and tools of our own design, and a database of hardware components we have managed to aggregate.

We will go into more detail about our HW design flow, as well as introduce a newly developed library that lets users navigate the landscape of Antmicro’s open hardware designs with much focus on component reusability and design transparency.
