Agenda:

18:30 - Snacks and Drinks

19:00 - "OpenShift for Databases" by Dimitri Vanoverbeke, Senior Solution Engineer at Percona

In this presentation you will learn about the features and limitations of running databases in containerized environments through specific and concrete use cases. The goal is to provide you with relevant information to help you put RDBMS and NoSQL solutions in containers and understand the implications to their database infrastructure

19:45 - Short break

20:00 - "How to Develop Your First Cloud Native Applications with Java" by Niklas Heidloff, Developer Advocate at IBM

For cloud-native applications, Kubernetes and Istio deliver a lot of key functionality out of the box which works generically for microservices, no matter in which language they have been implemented, and independent from the application logic. However, some cloud-native functionality cannot be covered by orchestration frameworks and service meshes. Instead, it needs to be handled in the business logic of the microservices, for example application-specific failover functionality, metrics and fine-grained authorization.

In this session, we will demonstrate how to build microservices with Jakarta EE and Eclipse MicroProfile and how to run and operate them on Kubernetes and Istio. MicroProfile also comes with convenience functionality that you typically need when developing microservices, for example invocations and implementations of REST APIs including their documentation. Attend this session to see how I walk you through a scalable and resilient sample application that can be run in any Kubernetes based infrastructure.

20:45 - Networking
