OpenShift Sweden - Autumn 2023 Meetup

Details
🚀 We're back in action! Join us for an exciting OpenShift Sweden Meetup.
As a kickoff event we will focus on Developer Experience and how to build developer portals on top of OpenShift powered by backstage.io. We are excited to co-host this event with the Sthlm Spotify Tech Group and the Backstage Community Meetup team.
AGENDA
17:30 Welcome instructions, food, drinks and mingling (Red Hat / Spotify)
Entrance from Regeringsgatan 19. In order to avoid queues we’ll send you a QR code to the email address provided in the registration form, which will let you into the office.
18:00 What is Backstage? (Spotify)
Backstage is an open platform for building developer portals, used by hundreds of companies to improve the life of their developers.
In this talk we’ll go through what Backstage is, why it was created and which problems it solves.
We’ll also dive into how to Bootstrap a new Backstage application, showing what you can get out of the box, together with a demo of Spotify’s internal Backstage instance.
18:30 Adopters Talk: Ingka (IKEA)
Ingka’s developer portal Allen aims to provide a high quality developer experience for the many engineers in accessing and interacting with platforms and shared services, for improved speed, reuse and innovation across the organization.
We’ll talk about developer experience at Ingka, platform engineering, alignment vs autonomy and actionable insights. Hear about our journey with Backstage so far, and Allen becoming the every day starting point for our engineering teams.
18:45 Break
19:00 Building developer portals on top of OpenShift and other K8s flavors (Red Hat)
In October 2022 Red Hat announced they’re joining the Backstage.io community. Since then a lot of work has been done. In this talk we will present Red Hat's contributions to the Backstage community and introduce project Janus - a Red Hat sponsored community for building developer portals, built on Backstage. And we’ll show how you could use the Helm distribution to provision your own Backstage on top of OpenShift or your Kubernetes of choice.
19:10 Software Templates from zero to hero (Spotify / Red Hat)
Software Templates is a core feature of Backstage which simplifies the creation of new Software within your Organization. Without a standardized process, engineers are slowed down by the need to make decisions about frameworks, CI/CD configurations, and so on. And that's how fragmentation begins to take hold, compounding the velocity and complexity problems organizations face.
In this talk, we’ll go through the concepts around Backstage Software Templates, deep diving into how to create a new Template and ending with an advanced Template demo. We will show the power of software templates, an end-to-end use case where your application is built and pushed into dev, qa and production environments using cool features such as source-to-image, pipelines as code, GitOps with ArgoCD and much more.
