In this session, we will explore the challenges to achieving great observability at scale. You will leran why relying solely on logs is not enough, lessons learned when switching vendors before the OpenTelemetry era, the process of bringing OpenTelemetry to production, and other lessons learned along the way.

The OpenTelemetry Collector is a vendor-agnostic backend component that receives and processes all telemetry data sent by the OpenTelemetry SDK. It supports anything that can produce OTel data (Envoy, Istio, etc.) and allows us to deliver data to any destination (e.g., db, a visualization tool) and change it as we see fit.

The Collector is a crucial component when thinking about scaling with OpenTelemetry. But many of us fail to see the great benefits of running it, especially at the beginning of our OpenTelemetry journey.

During this session, we will explore why you should run the OpenTelemetry Collector. You will learn about the differences between sending traces directly from the SDK, using the collector to handle logs and metrics, how various deployments can improve performance, why the collector is essential to managing tracing cost, the cons of running it yourself, and much more.
