We're pleased to announce our next meetup June 6th, 2024! As usual, we'll take care of food, drinks and awesome sessions - you just need to bring you ;-)

This meetup will feature two talks aimed at (Java) developers:
First, Paco van Beckhoven will give share lessons learned about code reviews with us.
Then, Jago de Vreede is playing quiz master and will learn us on compiler optimizations in the mean while.

All sessions will be presented in English; RSVP now for an evening of learning and fun!

The meetup will be at the OpenValue office in Utrecht (directions: https://route.openvalue.eu), enough free parking spaces available.

Agenda
17:30 Walk in

18:30 Talk 1 (see below)
19:30 Break
19:45 Talk 2 (see below)
20:45 Drinks

First talk: Cracking the Code Review: from Guesswork to Automated Guidance
Code reviews are vital for ensuring good code quality and fostering teamwork. They serve as one of our last lines of defense against bugs and subpar code reaching production. Yet, they often turn into annoying tasks riddled with frustration, hostility, unclear feedback and lack of standard practices. How can we improve this crucial process?

From a decade's worth of experience and consulting across varied companies, I've extracted essential lessons about code reviews. In this session we will cover:

  • The Art of Effective Code Reviews: Learn "how not to come across as a passive-aggressive jerk", the value of self-reviews, and effective communication strategies.
  • Streamlining the Review Process: Embrace clear repository ownership and refined review guidelines for more efficient and constructive reviews.
  • Elevating Reviews with Automated Tools: The most fun part! Explore tools that reinforce code consistency and quality, from automated style fixes to architecture checks. Let's cut through the noise of bikeshedding and focus on the essence of the changes.

By the end of this presentation, you'll have the skills to review code like a professional, as well as an additional set of tools to enhance the quality of your code.

About Paco
A passionate and experienced software engineer that likes to challenge the world and the software around him.
He regularly speaks at conferences to entertain, and more importantly, educate visitors on various topics with a focus on software quality.
He's working as a software engineer at Hexagon where his main focus is to improve the development process.

Second talk: Quiz: What do you know about Java compiler optimizations?
The Java HotSpot compilers support a suite of advanced optimizations to enable high-performance programs. Some of these optimizations include method inlining, removing unnecessary checks and code. The compiler does this at different times, but what do you already know about these optimizations?

In this quiz, I’ll test your knowledge of different optimizations. After each question, the answer will be explained. So even if you don’t know anything about the subject you should get a deeper understanding of why the compiler behaves as it does. And why sometimes bad code is just as good as the clean code. To be able to participate you will need an internet-connected device.

About Jago
Jago is a full-stack software engineer at OpenValue, as a software engineer he has seen a broad-spectrum of projects. He also likes to take Java to the extreme and do things with are normally not done with Java, like playing an automated guitar. He is passionate about his work and likes to share his knowledge and has therefore spoken at conferences worldwide.
