See all- Opne Auge Film Club #28: Black DogKulturbanken, Bryne
After a long and ☀️ filled summer, it is now time for blankets, hot drinks, and, of course, good movies 🎬!
Opne Auge returns for our Fall/Winter semester, and this time we're doing things a little bit differently. Instead of announcing our films one by one, we are sharing the ⭐️full semester agenda⭐️ right at the start! We hope this helps you plan for/around our screenings, and that we will see many of you this upcoming semester 🫶
Now, to the movie.
What do the Beijing 2008 Olympics, stray dogs, and someone being released from prison have in common?
Yes, exactly: Black Dog.Black Dog (2024) is directed by Guang Hu 🇨🇳 and shows how much the world can change when you've been in prison for 10 years - especially if that is in China, where development sometimes seems to go faster than the country can keep up with itself. Despite the abandoned cityscapes and the strong Western / film noir themes, there is an undeniable feel-good element in Black Dog, with the relationship between protagonist Eddie Pang and his adopted dog Xin as main focus.
ℹ️ Trigger warnings: No actual dogs were harmed in the making of this movie, but some dogs are portrayed as treated poorly and/or suffering.

- Opne Auge Film Club #29: ThelmaKulturbanken, Bryne
TRIGGER WARNING: There are strong, flashing lights in this movie. If you have photosensitive epilepsy, please consider skipping this screening.
🎃 With Halloween so close, our October screening deserved something a little spooky. But picking a good contestant was trick(or treat...)y. There are so many classics to choose from, as well as recent releases like The Substance, making a decision rather difficult.
Then we realised the answer was under our nose all along...
Join us for Joachim Trier's 🇳🇴 Thelma (2017), starring Stavanger-local Eili Harboe! Thelma has all of Trier's usual atmospherics, with silences, long glances and unspoken words carrying most of the conversation. But it definitely surpasses the realm of common reality and enters into the supernatural.
As more and more unexplainable things happen around our protagonist Thelma, a young girl who recently started her studies in Oslo, we feel the conflict between her religious upbringing and a strange sense of power in all things she was taught not to want, or do... 👁️
Thelma was nominated for the 2017 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film 🏆. Despite not winning that one, it has won several other awards, including the Norwegian International Film Festival!
ℹ️ Language: Norwegian, Norwegian subtitles.

- Opne Auge Film Club #30: Taxi (Tehran)Kulturbanken, Bryne
Back in 2015, when Jafar Panahi released his docufiction "Taxi", it would depict a reality that was, for many of us, almost incomprehensible 🌍. Today, a mere 10 years later, we are witnessing the descend into autocracy and totalitarianism real-time.
That is not to say that Taxi is a bleak, depressing movie! In fact, it is quite the opposite. Taxi stars Jafar as a taxi driver 🚕, recording himself and the people he drives around with several dashcams. There is nothing extreme about these people, nothing "cinema worthy" perhaps. We see every day life in Tehran, we get glimpses into their struggles and resistance, we laugh and we get to think about what freedom means.
But perhaps most importantly, we get to see a film that was not even allowed to be made. Jafar was banned from making movies and traveling in 2010 - yet he made this anyhow.
Taxi won the Golden Bear & FIPRESCI price at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival, and is a film that everyone should see.
ℹ️ Language: Persian, Norwegian subtitles
