Opne Auge Film Club #26: Summer 1993

Details
With only two more screenings to go before we move into summer break, allow us to take you to one summer in particular with Carla Simón's 🇪🇸 2017 "Summer 1993".
"Summer 1993" is a movie that challenges the viewer to revisit what it was like to be a child - to be part of a world without necessarily being able to understand, or control it . We follow Frida, a six year old who has just lost both of her parents and is taken in by her uncle and aunt in rural Spain. The shift from Barcelona to this new household is not easy for Frida, and we get to see how this impacts her over the turn of this one summer ☀️.
"Summer 1993" is autobiographical, and was filmed in the same region of Spain (Garrotxa) as where Simón herself had to move - as a six year old, after losing her parents to AIDS related disease. It deals with grief, but not in the way you'd expect - it uses casual, slow scenes of afternoon play, and a mature, reminiscing sort of view on how it feels to experience loss.
This film has won over thirty(!) awards 🏆, with notably the Debut Film award at the Berlin International Film Festival 2017, and was also sent in as Spain's submission for Best Foreign Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
