Opne Auge Film Club #27: Pride

Details

June is internationally known as pride month🏳️‍🌈! To celebrate, it is only fitting for us to screen Matthew Warchus’ 🇬🇧2014 film aptly called… “Pride”!

“Pride” tells the (true) story of how a group of LGTBQ activists team up to support a very unlikely demographic: Briths miners, who have been on strike to protest the closure of their mining pits⛏️.

What makes “Pride” such a joy to watch, however, is that it manages to tell this story with loads of humour (and a fantastic 80s soundtrack 🎸) without failing to convey the harsh realities of the 1980s, with discrimination against queer people and the fear of AIDS. This renders “Pride” into an absolute feel-good 🌟movie, which is a refreshing alternative to the many heavy and depressing queer films out there.

In terms of awards, “Pride” won the Queer Palm at 2014's Cannes Film Festival 🏆, and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 2015 - among many other nominations, and a few other wins.
