Opne Auge Film Club #34: Girlhood
Details
Our next screening takes us to the French suburbs of Paris once more, but this time it will neither be in black and white nor set in the 90s. In Céline Sciamma's 🇫🇷 "Girlhood" (2014), we follow 16 year old Marieme in her journey of self-discovery.
Being young, black, and a woman, means Mariene has to face a society that is essentially set against her. With school offering little to no support for what she needs, she turns to a local girl gang & starts discovering alternative paths to adult- and selfhood. This involves theft and intimidation ✊, but also strength and support and the ability for Mariene to stand up for herself.
"Girlhood" is gritty, but also electric ⚡with a pulsating techno score (written by Para One) and music from Rihanna 💎. It was nominated for four(!) categories at the César Awards🏆, and received a nomination at the British Independent Film Award🏆.
Being white herself, Sciamma has received backlash for making a movie portraying what it's like being black. We think the best thing you could do is watch the film and decide for yourselves!
