What we’re about
Welcome! We are the Orange County Sierrans Section of the National Sierra Club Angeles Chapter. Our schedule includes Hiking, Backpacking, hikes for Conservation, special Newcomer events, BBQ’s, State Parks camping/hiking, winter sports activities, ski trips, bus trips and Adventure Travel. We are open to people of all ages and marital, ethnic status. Our events are led by qualified leaders who have been through extensive leadership training before they receive their leadership rating. Orange County Sierrans may sponsor local events as well as international and out of state events, so we are a little more than a local organization. We are backed by the 40,000 member Angeles Chapter and the 650,000 member National Sierra Club. The Angeles Chapter boundaries are from Santa Clarita to San Clemente, from the ocean to the foothills. The Sierra Club is the oldest and largest environmental grassroots organization in the nation. The Sierra Club was founded in 1892 by the famous naturalist, John Muir. Not only was this guy America’s best known voice from the wilderness and a most effective conservation leader but he was a fearless mountaineer taking enormous risks climbing in the High Sierra, solo travel on crevassed glaciers and exploring Alaska in a little canoe. We have a long tradition of outdoor activities, so come join us. You might even want to become a member of the Sierra Club and know you are helping to save our remaining wild places. “Explore, Enjoy and Protect.”

State & County policy on dogs: Dogs are prohibited from backcountry trails and the beaches for the following reasons:
1.To Protect Park Resources
-Dogs are predators by nature, and their presence or lingering scent will disturb and frighten wildlife nearby. Dogs can transmit diseases and parasites to native animals. Dogs that run loose or become lost often harass or kill park wildlife.
2.For the Safety and Enjoyment of Others
– Some people are intimidated by dogs, even friendly ones. Dogs reduce the amount of wildlife that hikers are likely to see. Also, dog waste along trails and on the beach is a nuisance to encounter and may contaminate the local water supply.
3.To Prevent Problems for You and Your Dog
– Dogs in wild areas can be bitten by rattlesnakes or other wildlife they happen to startle. Dogs frequently pick up ticks and are sometimes injured by toxic or thorny plants. If your dog comes in contact with poison oak, it can easily transfer the irritating oil to your skin. An unleashed dog can suffer painful or sometimes fatal falls. Park regulations, common courtesy, and good judgment all require that you take special care when bringing your pet to a natural area.6 attendees
O: Carnival New Orleans: Parades, Music, Neighborhoods and Authentic Food
Location not specified yetJoin an insider-curated tour of New Orleans, created by a former 10-year resident and not offered by any other company. Tour will include walking parades, gumbo and po’boys, art and museum exhibits, historic neighborhoods and brass bands. A resident filmmaker, ethnographer, cook, and scholar are your guides. Enjoy three early Mardi Gras parades: Boheme, an unconventional walking art exhibit with brass bands; Krewe de Vieux, which features spectacular satirical floats of the year's current events and brass bands; and ‘tit Rex (https://titrexparade.com/), whose floats ride on skateboards pulled by members in black tie handing out tiny throws and backed up by brass bands.
Hear live music, learn to cook gumbo, and tour exhibits: the Historic New Orleans Collection featuring exhibits on civil rights and musicians; the Louisiana State Museum’s exhibits on jazz, Mardi Gras and Botanica Gardens; and City Park, which includes the world renown Bestoff Sculpture Garden (https://noma.org/besthoff-sculpture-garden/), Grow Dat Youth Farm (https://neworleanscitypark.org/visit-city-park/grow-dat/) and the Crescent City Farmers Market. Visit Treme’s Congo Square, which was a gathering place for enslaved and free people of color during the 19th century; then ferry to charming and historic Algiers Point, a ‘Site of Memory’ associated with the UNESCO Slave Route Project. Participants will walk 3-5 miles per day and enjoy an optional bike tour (pedicabs available for non-cyclists).
