O: Carnival New Orleans: Parades, Music, Neighborhoods and Authentic Food
Details
Join an insider-curated tour of New Orleans, created by a former 10-year resident and not offered by any other company. Tour will include walking parades, gumbo and po’boys, art and museum exhibits, historic neighborhoods and brass bands. A resident filmmaker, ethnographer, cook, and scholar are your guides. Enjoy three early Mardi Gras parades: Boheme, an unconventional walking art exhibit with brass bands; Krewe de Vieux, which features spectacular satirical floats of the year's current events and brass bands; and ‘tit Rex (https://titrexparade.com/), whose floats ride on skateboards pulled by members in black tie handing out tiny throws and backed up by brass bands.
Hear live music, learn to cook gumbo, and tour exhibits: the Historic New Orleans Collection featuring exhibits on civil rights and musicians; the Louisiana State Museum’s exhibits on jazz, Mardi Gras and Botanica Gardens; and City Park, which includes the world renown Bestoff Sculpture Garden (https://noma.org/besthoff-sculpture-garden/), Grow Dat Youth Farm (https://neworleanscitypark.org/visit-city-park/grow-dat/) and the Crescent City Farmers Market. Visit Treme’s Congo Square, which was a gathering place for enslaved and free people of color during the 19th century; then ferry to charming and historic Algiers Point, a ‘Site of Memory’ associated with the UNESCO Slave Route Project. Participants will walk 3-5 miles per day and enjoy an optional bike tour (pedicabs available for non-cyclists).
Cost includes 5 nights in a comfortable French Market area hotel (2 per room, own bed), with pool, gym, WIFI, and breakfast. Price also includes most transportation and lunches, museum and excursion fees, pre-trip New Orleans supper and screening of City of a Million Dreams documentary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44aV2Thx4eA&t=19s).
