Talk Abstract
An overview of Electric Propulsion in spaceflight and its uses with a closer look at the propulsion system on HuskySat-1. The talk will describe the benefits and drawbacks of electric propulsion in space over conventional chemical means; touch on the how and why of several types of electric propulsion systems; and go into more detail on the pulsed plasma thruster being tested in space aboard UW's HuskySat-1.

Speaker
Paige Northway is a PhD candidate in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington working on plasma propulsion systems for small satellites. With a background in engineering physics and an interest in both space sciences and instrumentation, Paige helped co-found the Husky Satellite Lab at UW, where students from across campus have come together to create a satellite the size of a shoebox and to learn about the difficulties in designing and building for launch and space environments.
