Media Defence: On legally challenging Pakistan's YouTube block

Details

Speaker: Nani Jansen, Senior Legal Counsel, Media Legal Defence Initiative

Nani has been working with Bytes For All, a Pakistani digital rights group, to support their legal case challenging the blocking of YouTube. She will be explaining the history of the case, and some of the challenges they've had along the way. Nani has incredible expertise in defending freedom of expression around the world and will be able to answer your questions about the case.

"Bytes for All argues that blanket and arbitrary blocks on URLs undermine the right to freedom of expression and the right to information as protected by Pakistan’s Constitution. Its Constitutional Petition requests that the Government of Pakistan be ordered to (1) make available a list of all blocked websites, along with the motives underlying the blocking in each case; (2) unblock YouTube and all other websites that are currently unavailable to the public; and (3) put in place adequate safeguards to prevent illegitimate future blocking." http://advocacy.globalvoicesonline.org/2013/03/28/advocates-challenge-youtube-blocking-pakistan/

Talk starts at 7.30pm
