Title: Leveraging SQL Server in 2020 - As a Platform and In the Cloud

It seems like a time of great change, everyone talking about "the cloud" and migrating to the cloud, serverless, and of course NoSQL. What does it all mean if you're deeply invested in SQL Server as a developer using TSQL, or a DBA who manages it, or a company that has all built products and services on top of it? Does the cloud solve the challenges of scaling and performance and availability better than on-premises installs? Are we still developing like its SQL Server 2005 and if so, is that bad? Are there things we should not be doing in SQL Server? What changes when you move your database to the cloud and is it a clear win, or are there trade-offs? And a really interesting one, what if your employer uses AWS or Google instead of Azure, does that change things? Should you upgrade to SQL 2019? Use Docker and Kubernetes for SQL? My goal isn't to tell you that SQL Server is the answer to all things - it's not. But if you are going to use it, spend money on it, build skills on it, these are questions worth revisiting and some (probably not all) of my thoughts on these may surprise you!

Andy Warren is a SQL Server consultant and trainer based in Orlando, FL. Focusing on administration, performance tuning, and SQL Server patterns and practices, he’s been a SQL Server MVP since 2008. Andy served two terms on the PASS Board of Directors, was a founding principal in SQLServerCentral, and created both the SQLSaturday and SQLRally event models.

Title: Leveraging Azure to Scale a Hyper-Growth Company

Growing a company by double its' size every year, for multiple years can be challenging without the right infrastructure in place. Adopting Cloud and DevOps best practices allows for us to scale quickly, and cost-effectively. As part of the shift towards a new mentality, we had to re-evaluate how we worked as a team, and adopt a more collaborative approach to building and releasing good software. Some of the key areas to discuss:

• Shifting version control from TFVC to Azure Repos and Git
• Using Azire Functions and Azure WebJobs for background services, and as many PaaS resources as possible
• Relying on build and release pipelines to expedite the delivery of good code
• Utilizing Infrastructure as Code to build our environments
• Leveraging things like Application Insights, and Log Analytics for telemetry ease
• Creating internal NuGet feeds for shared code
• Utilizing the cloud to help us design a service-based architecture

Eric is a Senior DevOps Engineer at BlueGrace Logistics, who focuses on teaching and implementing DevOps best practices to the different software teams. He was also one of the pioneers in the company that helped them shift to a cloud-first strategy, enabling them to scale efficiently as one of the fastest growing privately held companies in the US.
