This Friday night series will review the wisdom in The Book of Ecclesiastes. Wikipedia says: these writings originated in the Hebrew Bible and became part of the Christian Old Testament. The title originates in the Hebrew word קֹהֶלֶת (Kohelet). Ecclesiastes has 12 chapters total. We will review 3 chapters a week. Some of this material compares to Stoicism and the other wisdom traditions that we study.

DESCRIPTION

One of the sources sums up: The author of Ecclesiastes puts his powers of wisdom to work to examine the human experience and assess the human situation. His perspective is limited to what happens "under the sun" (as is that of all the wisdom teachers). He considers life as he has experienced and observed it between the horizons of birth and death -- life within the boundaries of this visible world.

In general, Stoicism teaches us how to handle difficult people and events, how to avoid anger and worry, and overall to use moderation in all aspects of our lives. We will discuss how Stoic practice can lead to a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Our group enjoys open-minded, respectful conversations on Stoicism and how it relates to science, culture, philosophy, other belief systems, and pop culture (books and movies). If we differ in our opinions, then "we agree to disagree". The long-term goal is to improve our minds via group discussions. Our group does NOT discuss religion or politics.

This event is free and open to the public.
