From Lambda to Kubernetes

FloSports is a company focused on streaming live sports to passionate fans that are underserved by the major networks. Three years ago we began the journey to move a critical API utilized by our live streaming client applications to AWS Lambda. The promises were great of not having to worry about scaling in the Serverless world. Things went well for a while, but we encountered numerous pain points and broken promises. Last year, we decided to port that API to a NestJS service that we run Dockerized through Google Kubernetes Engine. This move has already been crucial to allow us to scale to keep up with our viewership growth and have confidence, via load testing, well beyond our current requirements.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jason Byrne serves as chief architect and leader of software R&D efforts at FloSports. As the company's VP of Engineering, he manages a team of developers focused on video streaming, live graphics overlays, real-time sports statistics, and rankings data. Jason is the founder and former CEO of MileSplit, an industry pioneer that grew to become the largest track & field website in the country. That Florida-based startup was acquired by FloSports in 2013.
