Book meetup: The Makioka Sisters by Junichiro Tanizaki

Details
Welcome to our summer book meetup! Since we are taking a break in July, we have time to read something a little longer than usual for our discussion in August. This summer, our long read is The Makioka Sisters by Japanese author Junichiro Tanizaki. It was written and published as a series of novellas from 1943 to 1948, and later collected into one book. It has been adapted for film and TV in Japan several times.
The first English translation of the The Makioka Sisters came out in 1957. It has received renewed attention following the American release of a film adaption by the Criterion Collection in 2011, and after the New York Times republished their original (1957) review of the novel in 2021, in which the reviewer compares Tanizaki's work to the novels of Jane Austen.
This meetup will take place in person at the main library in downtown Oslo and will also have an online option for anyone who wants to join remotely via Zoom - see the link in the "how to find us" section of the event for more details. Please let us know in advance if you are interested in joining us via Zoom!
After the meetup, for those who are interested, we may head off somewhere nearby for a drink (attendance optional :-)
See you there!
