October short story meetup: mystery story curated by Leisha

Welcome to our October short story & social meetup! This month we will be reading a mystery text selected by book club organizer Leisha. This is the first chapter of a novel, but also works as a short story. This story comes with a challenge. We're not telling you what the novel is that the text is excerpted from. The challenge is - can you guess what book it is? Please don't use AI or Google text search, that would be cheating ;-) If you guess it, keep it to yourself and make a note of where in the text you realized! We'll compare our notes at the meetup :-)

We'll give you one hint to help you guess: The author of this novel in later years deeply regretted writing it. This is something that may be an interesting focal point of our discussion.

This meetup will take place in person at Bristol Pub in downtown Oslo. They serve a large selection of drinks and offer both snacks and food.
