Talk: A Beginner's Guide to Realtime Data with Kafka
(Presented in English)

Abstract:
Apache Kafka's an interesting beast. It solves many different data-processing problems by being part queue, part database, and part message bus. But it can be daunting to get started, and like many things, the only real way to understand Kafka is to build something with it. So let's do that!

In this live-coding session we'll take our first steps with Kafka, building a system that tracks the live status of metro trains. As we do so, we'll build up an understanding of some of Kafka's core ideas - topics, connectors, consumers and groups - to build up a mental model of how Kafka works, and where it works best.

By the end you'll have a starter project, and the shape of Kafka in your mind so you can make faster progress building your own realtime applications.

Bio:
Kris Jenkins is a Developer Advocate for Confluent, a veteran startup contractor, and former CTO & Co-Founder of a gold trading business. He started his career working for a finance company whose success depended on having a better data model than all their competitors, and the search for better architecture has been with him ever since.

Talk: Practical Pipelines: A Houseplant Alerting System with ksqlDB
(Presented in English)

Abstract:
Houseplants can be hard – in many cases, over- and under-watering can have the same symptoms. Take away the guesswork involved in caring for your houseplants while also gaining valuable experience in building a practical, event-driven pipeline in your own home! This talk explores the process of building a houseplant monitoring and alerting system using a Raspberry Pi and Apache Kafka.Moisture and temperature readings are captured from sensors in the soil and streamed into Kafka. From here, we’ll use stream processing to transform the data, create a summary view of the current state, and drive real-time push alerts through Telegram. In this session, I’ll talk about how I ingest the data followed by the tools – including ksqlDB and Kafka Connect – that help transform the raw data into useful information, and finally I’ll show how to use Kafka Producers and Consumers to make the entire application more interactive.

Bio:
Danica Fine is a Senior Developer Advocate at Confluent where she helps others get the most out of their event-driven pipelines. Prior to this role, she served as a software engineer on a streaming infrastructure team at Bloomberg where she predominantly worked on Kafka Streams- and Kafka Connect-based projects. Her expertise in streaming systems has taken her to a number of conferences and speaking engagements over the years, giving her the chance to express her love of Kafka to anyone who will listen. Danica is committed to increasing diversity in the technical community and actively serves as a mentor to a number of women in tech. She can be found on Twitter @TheDanicaFine.
