Online Beginner Oil Painting Workshop

Details

In this FREE online workshop, Arvin will go over oil painting techniques for beginners. This includes a very simple process for producing alla-prima paintings which creates complete paintings in a matter of minutes, using non-toxic materials with no solvents.

NOTE: No prior experience is necessary, and materials are not required to participate in the workshop.

The workshop will run for 40 minutes, and will cover the following:

20 minutes - Oil painting materials and painting procedure.
10 minutes - Introduction to value*, seeing value from color.
10 minutes - Continuation of the previous workshop, drawing and breaking down scenes into shapes of value and color with Q&A.

* Value in Art - In-Depth Guide with Examples and Overview (artincontext.org)

Recommended Materials:
If you already own paints or other materials listed below, you are encouraged to use them before purchasing replacements. The content below is for those who would like recommendations.

Oil Paint (Single Pigment, Ground in Linseed Oil)
- Ivory Black Artist Grade Oil Paint (Recommended Brand: Winsor and Newton or Gamblin)
- Titanium White Artist Grade Oil Paint (Recommended Brand: Gamblin)

Brushes:
- Dollarama $2 Synthetic/Golden Taklon brushes will be used to produce the paintings shown in the presentation.
(Recommended Brands: Trekell, Silver Brush, Rosemary and Co, Raphael)

Canvas:
- Any surface primed for oil painting. Dollarama canvas will be used, however higher quality canvas will be recommended. Any pack of bulk canvas will work. For reference: (Recommended Brand: Fredrix).

Medium:
- COLD PRESSED LINSEED OIL - This is very important in order to ensure fast drying. (Recommended Brands: Chelsea Classical Studio, Natural Pigments [Sun-bleached], RGH Oil Paints [Atelier Series, Hand-washed])
- Due to the lack of availability for these products in Canada, Winsor and Newton or Gamblin is recommended*:

  • Refined Linseed Oil | DeSerres
  • Refined Linseed Oil - 8.5 oz | DeSerres
*Note: Refined linseed oil uses a harsh, chemical-based refinement process over the natural process in the recommended options mentioned above. It is non-toxic and will be sufficient for beginner paintings. Plan to upgrade to cold pressed in the future for best results (fast drying time, less yellowing, zero chemicals, etc).
