Re: [secularhumanism-7] Nobel Peace Prize

Hi Mile:

I understand that there are certain issues here are at stake regarding the civility of Europe, but considering the circumstances, I think that Europe is actually doing very well.  -You know, we have to stop concentrating so much on the negative.

But people have died in Europe recently at the hands of other Europeans.  Roma are being persecuted and sometimes killed in Hungary for example:

and protesters in Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal are being handled with very heavy hands by the police:

and the Balkan war.  Slovenia is part of the EU.

Unrest is not violence where people are killed (some property damage yes).  The EU has issues yes, but the issues are being addressed without killing each other as they would in the old days.  Rather than see the current situation in Europe as a sign of its weakness I see it as a sign of its strengths that it can deal with these stresses and still maintain a semblance of civility.  It has tamed the contested terrain that is politics and we should all be grateful.

That might be exactly why they are doing it now, despite the fiscal crisis; With the future of the European experiment uncertain, it might make even less sense to give the prize out later depending on what ends up happening.

I think part of the reason why people are upset with the EU being given the peace prize has to do with the timing. There are several countries in the EU that are dealing with periods of fairly severe civil unrest.
Regardless of the EU's contribution over time, the timing of the award ignored that and so causes citizen's of countries like Greece to feel as though their suffering is being mocked.

I agree with you Bill. While the EU has its obvious contemporary failures in financial governance (which actually pale in comparison to the US' fiscal black hole), I believe it has led the way in showing how national governments can cede authority to a higher level government with the objective broadening civil society across the continent. I hope it becomes and example of this for ever grater portions of the world and that ultimately there is much less multinational anarchy and more just international rule of law.

IMO, this is a far less controversial Peace Prize award than the one "preemptively" granted to Obama.

The EU kept the peace in Europe for over 70 years - it was well deserved.  This is the continent that slaughtered millions in the previous 50 years.

In the wake of the Nobel Peace Prize having been awarded to the EU someone sarcastically made, and rightly so, the following comment:

"Maybe next year the prize should be given to Planet Earth for not self-imploding."

P.S.: at least they didn't award it to bearded morons with machine guns
