I was reading a recent assessment on one of the feeds I get that comments on cultural and social matters that speaks to the impact of social media on reading. This person noted that platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok encourage us to consume short posts, fragmented and superficial videos, and brief snippets of information. Consequently, they clutter our digital space, diminishing our attention span and discouraging us from engaging with higher literature. This makes it increasingly difficult to focus on and tedious to read longer texts. Furthermore, it's much easier to find other people's thoughts about a book and then adopt them as your own, rather than forming independent opinions.
Other research notes that the decline of book reading is a cultural and cognitive shift driven by digital distractions, shrinking attention spans, and changing entertainment habits. While this trend raises concerns about deep literacy and critical thinking, it also reflects a natural evolution in how society accesses information and narratives. Findings in research show that there is a distinct drop in how much time people—particularly younger demographics—spend reading books. Adolescents reading for fun has plummeted over the last two decades, with a notable drop in the number of 13-year-olds reading almost daily. Educators have pointed out that even high-achieving university students struggle to muster the attention span required to immerse themselves in full, substantial texts. And the proportion of adults who read books for pleasure has notably decreased compared to previous generations, with social media replacing books as a primary source of daily engagement
While reading books in the traditional sense is declining, communication and storytelling are not. People are consuming more written text than ever before in human history—it is just spread across articles, online forums, and social media feeds. Some experts argue that modern mediums simply serve as a different way to access information, though long-form advocates maintain that books offer a unique form of intellectual structure that algorithms and short-form media cannot replicate.
