PROFILE: Gwynne Shotwell

Gwynne Shotwell is one of the most influential leaders in modern spaceflight and a key figure behind SpaceX’s transformation from a risky startup into the world’s most active launch provider. As President and Chief Operating Officer, she oversees daily operations, commercial strategy, and mission execution—turning ambitious engineering goals into reliable, real-world results.

Shotwell joined SpaceX in 2002, when private orbital spaceflight was still widely dismissed as unrealistic. With a background in mechanical engineering, she helped secure critical early NASA and commercial contracts that allowed the company to survive, grow, and earn the trust of customers worldwide. Her leadership has been central to the success of the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy, and to the breakthrough of reusable rockets that dramatically lowered the cost of access to space.

She is also deeply involved in SpaceX’s long-term vision, including Starship—designed for missions to the Moon and Mars—and Starlink, the global satellite internet network.
