Once Upon A Time, Before SpaceX & Artemis, there was a radical idea: ordinary people building civilizations in space within our lifetimes. In the 1970s, Gerard K. O’Neill’s vision ignited the L5 Society—a grassroots movement that turned science fiction into a serious mission. With thousands of supporters and a clear goal, they pushed policy, challenged international agreements like the Moon Treaty, and proved that the future of space wasn’t just for governments.

Then history shifted. The L5 Society merged with the National Space Institute—an organization linked to rocket pioneer Wernher von Braun—forming the National Space Society in 1987. It was a fusion of visionary thinking and spaceflight legacy, and the ripple effects are still shaping today’s push to live and work beyond Earth.
