PROFILE: George O. Smith
Details
George O. Smith is best known for the story collection “The Complete Venus Equilateral.” It is a series of collected short stories about the engineers who build the communication systems for use in space. He also deals with how they create things to solve problems and the problems that those solutions cause. He did not invent the teleporter/replicator (very similar to what Star Trek uses) but he showed what that tech would do to society (i.e., it destroys the economy).
He is often compared with Arthur C. Clarke, his contemporary. Clarke was a physicist while Smith was an engineer (specifically, an electronics engineer). Clarke described a radar device that fit in two truck trailers while Smith described radar that fit in artillery shells.
