The full title of this talk is 'From Mystical Illiteracy in the West to Creation Spirituality - where Science and Mysticism Meet'.

Fox began his academic journey by joining the Dominican Order, a Catholic religious order, in 1958. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1967. Throughout his early career, Fox focused on studying philosophy and theology, earning multiple degrees, including a doctorate in spirituality from the Institut Catholique de Paris.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Fox gained recognition for his groundbreaking work in recovering the mystical and wisdom traditions within Christianity. He emphasized the importance of embracing creation, ecology, and social justice as integral parts of spirituality. This holistic approach became known as "creation spirituality" and drew inspiration from various sources, including indigenous wisdom, mystical traditions, and ecological awareness.

Fox's unorthodox theological views and his criticism of certain aspects of the Catholic Church hierarchy led to tensions with the Vatican. In 1988, he was silenced by the Vatican and eventually left the Dominican Order in 1993. He became an Episcopal priest and founded the non-profit organization called the "University of Creation Spirituality" in Oakland, California, which later became part of the Wisdom University.

As an author, Matthew Fox has written numerous books exploring topics such as mysticism, spirituality, social justice, and ecological consciousness. Some of his notable works include "Original Blessing," "The Coming of the Cosmic Christ," and "The Hidden Spirituality of Men."

Fox's teachings and writings have influenced many individuals seeking to bridge spirituality, social justice, and ecological concerns. He has been an advocate for interfaith dialogue, environmental activism, and the integration of spiritual wisdom into daily life.

Today, Matthew Fox continues to teach, write, and lecture on topics related to mysticism, spirituality, and the urgent need for a transformative spirituality that embraces the interconnectedness of all beings and the Earth.

This is an international online event which will be chaired by David Warden, Chairman of Dorset Humanists. The event is from 7.00 until 8.15pm, including time for Q&A.
