Winery/Woods/Rivers/Greenway/Urban +\- 8.5 Mile Easy/Moderate Hike in Elkin, NC
Details
Joun us for a fun unique hike that involves the Mountain to Sea Trail, Over Mountain Victory Trail, urban part of Elkin, river and streams, a nice greenway, and ending at a winery. For those that made the first hike, I’m mixing it up a little bit with the beginning and ending of the hike being different.
This is a one way +/- 8.5 mile easy hike without a lot of elevation gain. We will meet at the excellent winery, Adagio Vineyards, in Elkin and then carpool over to the beginning off the trail.
This is a fun special hike involving a lot of different things including rivers, streams, woods, railroads, urban area, greenway, and historical places.
We will pass restrooms on the hike.
Pack water and snacks.
Carpool: Contact me if you would like to carpool from Statesville. 704-516-1001
Our hike ends at Adagio Vineyards for excellent wines. Bring food or purchase charcuterie or cheese and crackers at the winery. Food brought into the winery is allowed. Pets are allowed inside the winery.
Adagio Vineyards is a boutique winery in Elkin, NC, known for its artisanal approach to winemaking, inspired by the musical term "adagio" (slowly and with passion). It offers a relaxed tasting experience with wines like Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and Traminette, alongside cozy indoor seating, outdoor fire pits, and pet-friendly options. The winery features a state-of-the-art underground facility and is part of the Surry County Wine Trail.
Elkin, NC, grew from Native American settlements into a vital textile and manufacturing hub, founded by Richard Gwyn in the 1840s who built mills (cotton, textiles) on the Big Elkin Creek. The arrival of the railroad in 1890 spurred growth, with Chatham Manufacturing (textiles- still in business today!) becoming a key employer, though floods and the Depression tested the town. Today, Elkin blends its textile past with a revitalized downtown, the Yadkin Valley wine region, arts, and outdoor recreation, maintaining its charm as a Blue Ridge foothill town
