May 2-3: Combination Beginners & Intermediate backpacking near Harrisburg PA
Details
Two trips in one! Depending on where/when you start, the trip will be for intermediate hikers or for beginners. Kevin will send off the intermediate hikers and will then hike with the beginners. We will be able to end our car shuttle at PA 225, just north of Harrisburg. For new backpackers, the general rule of thumb is to take the distance you have hiked in a day and cut it at least in half for backpacking (example, can do 6 mile day hike, can only do 3 mile backpack at most).
Intermediate Hike: Ed Davenport will be leading the group. Start off at Clark Creek at PA 325. Start off with an 800 ft climb up to the top of the ridge in the first half mile, then ridge running 6 miles to the Peters Mountain shelter. Some great views of the valley at Shikelimy Rocks, and 2-3 others. The next day, we’ll get up and hike out 3.1 miles to PA 225 (where the beginners started) before doing car shuttle back.
Beginner Hike: Kevin D will lead this group. Start at PA 225 and run the ridge with only minor 100ft up/dowsn. Some great views along the wa at Zeager Orverlook, Fumitory Rocks and Table rock. Total of 3.1 miles to Peters Mountain Shelter.
Additional Notes: Info on Peter’s Mountain Shelter are available at : https://cnyhiking.com/ATinPA-PetersMountain.htm and other places you can search online. You tube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM79qO3-Rak. The water source at the shelter is about 0.3 miles downhill (a bit of a walk) so be ready to walk down & up. Since we are “running the ridge” on this hike, expect the ground to be rocky (the AT hikers call the state “rockslyvania”) so I suggest good boots and hiking poles.
Weather could be cold or warm, so as we get closer, we’ll need to watch the weather and pack appropriately.
Hike limited to 25 people. Hike Leader is Kevin Drevik (856) 630-2485 or [kdrevik@aol.com](mailto:kdrevik@aol.com).
