July 11-12: Come backpack the AT in New Hampshire and stay at AMC hut: Beginners & Intermediate Still time to register until May 31st. Two trips in one! The AMC has a series of lodges/huts in the White Mountains, where you get a bunk to sleep in, dinner and breakfast the next day. Take the opportunity to try to hike in the White Mountains and see what the AMC has to offer. This should be considered “advanced beginner” since, thought it is only 3 miles, it will be rocky.
We will head up to New Hampshire (a six hour drive) and meet in the early afternoon. After staging cars, both groups will hike 3 miles up the Zeeland Trail (a former small railway they used to supply the hut, which is now a trail). A 600 foot elevation gain. We will stay at the hut that night (no need to pack a tent or sleeping bag, just a sheet for the bunk, change of clothes, rain gear and snacks/lunch). Zeeland has a waterfall nearby and a pond for swimming. Enjoy a nice dinner and a “show” at the Zeeland hut, put on by the volunteers. The next day, we will enjoy breakfast and another “show” before heading out.
Beginners will hike back down the trail we came up on (3 miles) to the cars staged there. Intermediate will hike out 7 miles on the AT to the other car area (6 miles level, last mile is a dramatic down). We will reunite the cars and then everyone can head back, or look for more fun in New Hampshire. Mount Washington is only 20 minutes from here!
Note, it will be somewhat rocky on both hikes, so be prepared for it. Even the former small railroad has some rocks.
Additional Notes: Info on Zeeland hut is available at: https://www.outdoors.org/destinations/new-hampshire/zealand-falls-hut/?utm_medium=search-organic&utm_source=google-business&utm_campaign=business-listings
. There are also numerous YouTube videos showing the hut and portions of the hike.
Weather could be cooler than expected, as it is New Hampshire, but expect the day to be warm.
Hike limited to 15 people. Cost for staying at hut is $230, which includes the bunk and two meals. The hut also has snacks you can buy. I will need your checks for the trip by May 31, made out to “Kevin Drevik.” My address is 20 Crider Avenue, Moorestown NJ 08057. If you do not get me the funds by that date, I will open up your slot to the wait list.
Let me know if you have questions. Hike Leader is Kevin Drevik (856) 630-2485 or [kdrevik@aol.com](mailto:kdrevik@aol.com).
