Sunday morning Pt. Dume rock climb.

Details

Pt. Dume, SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!

Sung and I have been working long and hard on this event, for all you corporate folks who can't make the weekday ones... starving ourselves, sleeping on beds of nails, watching countless hours of Golden Girl re-runs (including drinking gallons of Geritol), and eating lots of fiber in the way of old ropes. Good news... I'm going to be there before the sun comes up. Bad news... I have to pull my anchors at 10am for another event later that day. So as long as someone (Dave V, Randy, Charles, Sung, etc.) comes in right after I pull mine, we can keep the routes.

There will be no rhyme or reason to this, and we can not have a monopoly on the whole cliff as we've done in the past. If you climb on someone outside of our event's ropes/rigs/anchors, you assume all liabilities, risks, and agree not to hold us, meetup, the organizers or anyone there responsible. Also, climbing on our ropes, you and you alone are responsible for your own safety. Ask your belayer how much experience they have. When in doubt, ask for help!

The basics: THIS event will go from 6:00am to 10:00am officially. Point Dume is one of the best crags of all time for moderate and beginning climbers. The main face has five routes from 5.6 to 5.9. The ocean side has three routes from 5.10b to 5.10d. We'll get what we can.

Shoes can be rented at Sports Chalet ($8), Adventure 16 ($12), and at some REI stores. I suggest looking on Ebay for climbing shoes too... some are as low as $25-50 for the Evolv series. Harnesses are inexpensive on ebay... some as low as $35-50 Bring a belay device if you have one... Gri Gri or Cinch preferred, ATC and ATS if that's all you have Bring a dynamic 10.2-11.6mm rope if you have one. 60-70 meters please! It's cold in the morning, with a good chance of being overcast. Dress in layers. Bring snacks, water, chair/blanket, protection from the elements (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, umbrella, shade canopy, etc.)

LIABILITY: You, and no one else, are 100% responsible for your safety at all times. Your attendance at this meetup signifies you agree to not hold this Meetup group or its organizers responsible for any injuries to your person or property that may occur.

Outdoor events such as rock climbing are inherently dangerous. Organizers are volunteers. They aren't certified in leading events, unless they state otherwise. Outdoor Singles and Socials Meetup Group (OSS) doesn't certify the qualifications of any of its organizers.

Rock climbing is rated one of the most dangerous sports by Forbes Magazine: http://www.forbes.com/2002/08/07/0807sport.html

CLIMB AT YOUR OWN RISK!

ADDRESS for your GPS: make sure you turn onto Westward Beach road, follow it around to the left, and go PAST the parked cars ALL the way into the back and furthest most parking area.

7200 Westward Beach Rd

Malibu, CA 90265

PARKING: There is a Free Parking Area (confirmed on 7/26/11, there is room for over 2 dozen cars if you get there early enough) READ THE SIGNS CAREFULLY!!! Located here http://bit.ly/ptdume_free_parking Take Birdview, to Cliffview to Grasswood. Drive up Grasswood about 100 feet where there aren't any "tow away" signs. Then you'll have to walk back down the little trails to get to the rock face.

$3 Parking Lot at the end of Westward Beach Road before 9am (get there early, pay at the pay station and put the receipt inside your car on the dashboard with the important info facing out so the ranger won't give you a ticket. $8 after 9am! If you get there after 9am, you'll pay $8 at the kiosk.
CARPOOLING: If you're interested in carpooling, post a comment below with whether you're looking to ride or drive and which city/area you're driving from. Try to carpool with someone you already know. People want to leave earlier, later... you might fight over the remote control, or who gets the end of the couch with the armrest... I'm just saying!

Top Rope Rigging: Anchors are worthless without the ropes to climb on. HUGE thanks to those last time who brought your ropes for us to use... Nancy, Robert D., Bill Weeks, Sung, John A, etc.

For those who can bring a rope and/or gear, or would like to help/learn to rig top ropes, please meet me at 5:00 AM at the top of the rock face, towards the left side as you face it. IT'S FRIGG'N EARLY... I know!!! Doughnuts, coffee, etc. greatly appreciated! lol. Walk up that small trail, and you'll see me at the top. I start setting the rigs at 5:05 AM, so be on time.. and be awake! Have your harness on, and be ready to rock n roll. You'll need about a 10 foot leash to clip in, just for the extra level of safety at this ungodly hour. If not, I'll have you clip in to one of mine.

Static rope 9.5-13mm for anchors preferred over tubular webbing. You'll need at least 50-60 feet of it. Steel locking ovals or Omega 10 steel locking carabiners preferred for the load/climbing rope. (I can still use your Rock Locks, nitrons or Jake's to secure to the anchor bolts. Bring them!) Others who can bring climbing ropes and/or gear, but can't make the "5:00AM" setup time, please come when you can and we'll be happy to have the extra gear.

Mojito Mas Famous Question & Answer section:

Q. Why the heck is this thing so damn early on a Sunday?

A. Because I'm not Donald Trump and can't afford to buy an entire beach. We're not going to be the only ones there! But I do want to make sure we get at least 2 of the north face routes, and at least one of the 5.10's on the ocean side.

Q. Can I bring my dog?

A. Unfortuneately, he or she would end up as shark bait. No dogs allowed on the beach. :( Sorry guys... and pups. Not this time.

Q. You said to bring doughnuts, coffee, etc. Can I bring a pasta salad?

A. Hell no. Don't give us all the squirts at 8am. "Sharts" will NOT be allowed at this event. lol.

Q. If I'm hung over from the night before, should I still go?

A. For your safety and the safety of others, STAY HOME!

Q. I often find a good morning yoga routine and a run up the sand useful. Will there be other health and well-being suckers there that I can pitch my own personal growth company and dating/match making services to?

A. F*&K NO!!!! Stay home. We're there to climb. This isn't the event for you to prey on our members or try to sell them some random crap.

Q. Are there any hot chicks coming? aka... I'm a total perv, show up to events so I can hit on EVERY girl there, then try to find them on the internet when they won't give me the time of day.

A. F*&K NO!!!!!! Actually, Tripple F*&K No! Enough is enough. You know who the f*&k you are, so Stay Home!!! Not only am I gonna bitch slap you, but I'll expose you to everyone in the group if you attempt to turn this event or any future events into a meat market. We're there to have fun in a safe environment for EVERYONE! So be on your best behavior.

AND to ALL of the women in the group: If at any time you feel uncomfortable, or that a certain member is getting out of hand, please let us know (Me, Dave V, Randy, Sung, Charles, especially tell David P., etc). We want to you feel safe at these events!!!

Donations:

I'll be collecting a buck or two for The Rope Fund, to support safe equipment. Pay us in person, and bring cash. No Pay Pal on this one... it's too hard to keep track of who paid for what.

THANK YOU to everyone @ the past events who have been giving us donations for the Rope Fund. Below is your money at work:

  1. Purchased yesterday - Omega 10 Steel Locking carabiners. Got them on sale for $22 each on amazon with shipping & tax.

1 a. Omega 10's replace old rock lock carabiners used on the load rope. Aluminum oxide ruboff turns your climbing rope black.

2b. Thank you to Jerry D.B., Bill Weeks, Gabe and Phil for helping me run the anchor ropes through the tubular webbing shealth at Stoney last time. You helped save/prolong the life of a rope!

Below... What the tubular webbing shealthing over the anchor rope does, and does well. Anchor rope is untouched safe inside. Woo hoo! This is ONE day of climbing at Stoney Point:
