• Buckthorn Cleanup at St Croix Savannah Scientific and Natural Area
St Croix Savannah Scientific and Natural Area is a beautiful area in Bayport. I am organizing a morning on October 27 to remove buckthorn. it is a pretty good workout in a lovely area overlooking the St Croix River. https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/snas/detail.html?id=sna01061 The SNA is hilly oak savannah with a restored prairie area. The removal is fairly rigorous - using brush saws or lappers, the trees are cut, then other team members "paint" the buckthorn stubs with herbicide, then the brush is piled. Later DNR crews will burn the brush piles. We have done a couple other of these days; it is a good project for adults and teens, not little kids. Directions: From Bayport, 0.7 mile W on Co Hwy 14, then 0.8 mile S on Co Hwy 21, then 0.25 mile E on Inspiration Pkwy, then 0.25 mile SE on Prairie Way, then about 0.15 mile E and S to dead end. Park at gate. There is a parking lot at the south end next to the Inspiration development off of County Road 14.

  • Full Moon Hike Around Pike
October 24th is considered the "Hunter's Moon" so let's see what kind of wildlife we find on a hike around Pike Island. With a full moon there should be no problems finding our way around the island, as the moon should be shining brightly and reflecting off the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. If you don't have a MN State Park sticker there is a pay box on the way out to pay and the cost for a one day pass is $7. Or you can buy a yearly sticker which is good for 12 months from the date of purchase for only $35. (Best money I ever spend!)

  • Canoe/Kayak the Wild St Croix River
Ok, so the St Croix River isn't exactly "wild", but it is wet and so far this summer looks to be a hot one. Therefore, it's time to get out on the water. We'll meet at the canoe/kayak rental shack inside the park. We are going to the Minnesota side of Interstate Park, and there is a $7 daily park fee that needs to be paid if one doesn't have a yearly pass. For those needing a canoeing partner, I will try to pair people up. We need to get a total of 10 canoes/kayaks to make this happen. There can be 3 in a canoe and they charge $3.50 for an extra life jacket. If you have your own life jacket please bring it. Also, bring snacks and refreshments with you for the[masked] hour journey down to Osceola. (We have a 2:30pm pick up time in Osceola.) Also, if you have your own canoe/kayak and want to join us please do so. Cost per person is $44.42 per canoe or $22.21pp for 2 to a canoe. (These are groups rates.) Single kayaks are available for rent at $30+tax. Checks made out to "Taylors Falls Canoe Rental" or you can pay the organizer cash to give to the rental agency.
