The Mighty Cadair Idris, Wales (Snowdonia Mountain Range) BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

The Mighty Cadair Idris, Wales (Snowdonia Mountain Range) BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

YHA Kings, Kings Youth Hostel, Islawr-dref, Dolgellau LL40 1TB, UK, Dolgellau, al, GB

ONE-OFF – Easter Bank Holiday Special - we've managed to secure this hostel for the best Bank Holiday of the year - the only one with 4 days holiday...

This Easter Bank Holiday, we head to Cadair Idris, arguably the most dramatic mountain in southern Snowdonia, rising above the Mawddach Estuary with a long elevated ridge, a glacial lake near the summit, and wide-ranging views across the mountains and out to Cardigan Bay. Quieter and wilder than Snowdon, and accessible only on foot, Cadair Idris offers a more immersive mountain experience. We’ll also discover the stunning Welsh coastline with a scenic hike along the hills to Barmouth and across the vast and breathtaking Mawddach sand estuary - often considered the UK's most stunning estuary. On the final day we enjoy a gentler walk through woodland, valley tops, and along a lake. We stay in a remote rural hostel beside the River Gwynant that we've hired exclusively for our group, with two hikes starting directly from the hostel and only the final day requiring a short drive.

** Key Info**
• Nights: 3 (Fri-Mon)
• Cost: £286 early bird / £312 standard
• Difficulty: Intermediate/Tough (3 hikes: 2-3 hrs, 5-6.5 hrs, 6.5-8 hrs)
• ️ Meals Included: All breakfasts, all packed lunches, Sat & Sun dinner, cream tea

** Trip Highlights**
• Summit the majestic Cadair Idris (893m) on a stunning mountain hike
• Enjoy a stay at a remote and idyllic Rural Hostel on the banks of the River Gwynant, surrounded by woodland
• Hike the coastal estuary around Barmouth
• Explore the charming seaside town and golden sand beaches of Barmouth
• Discover mountain ridges, lakes, and valleys on a gentler final day hike
• Escape the crowds and experience the peaceful side of Snowdonia
• Enjoy a sociable group adventure in stunning natural surroundings

** Trip Description**
Cadair Idris is a spectacular mountain consisting of a 3km long elevated ridge and a glacial lake near the summit. It offers breathtaking views on a clear day – Mount Snowdon can be seen as well as views of Cardigan Bay and the sea.

Cadair Idris is 893m high and after we reach the summit we will have a lofty hike around the narrow rim of its cwm, offering breathtaking views in all directions. Snowdon attracts the masses due to being the largest mountain in Wales, while Cadair Idris is often considered the more rewarding mountain walk and a lot quieter.

On Sunday, we’ll ease off the altitude but keep the wow factor with a coastal and mountain hike to the seaside town of Barmouth. This route is a hidden treasure - a rugged and scenic climb into the hills where the sea meets the mountains. With sweeping views of the Mawddach estuary, coastline, and Snowdonia’s peaks, it’s a breathtaking contrast to the raw, alpine drama of Cadair Idris. After arriving in Barmouth, we’ll have free time to unwind and explore - with a walk along the beach, a coffee by the harbour, or a wander through its historic streets.

Monday offers a gentle finale - a peaceful hike through ancient woodland, glacial valleys, and alongside mountain lakes. This relaxed walk is ideal for stretching your legs one final time before the journey home. Though easier in pace, the scenery is still classic Snowdonia, with wild ridges, hidden trails, and tranquil waters reflecting the surrounding peaks. We aim to finish around midday, giving you plenty of time to make the drive home, rested and recharged from this mountain adventure.

** Itinerary**

Friday – Arrival
Arrive at our exclusively hired hostel accommodation booked in Snowdonia. Settle into your room, and meet your fellow hikers over a relaxed evening. The atmosphere is informal - no rush, just good company and excitement for the days ahead.

Saturday – Cadair Idris
• Distance: 13km (8 miles)
• Grading: Challenging, some proper mountain hiking
• Ascent: 910m
• Hiking time: 5 - 6.5 hours

We’ll set out directly from the hostel on foot and join the Pony Track, a classic route up Cadair Idris - so no driving today. The path begins gently before opening into wide mountain views, steadily gaining height with every step. As we climb, the trail skirts the edge of the dramatic glacial cwm, revealing ever-expanding vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. There are sections that are very steep and some with loose scree/rocky zones.

Reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded on a clear day with sweeping 360-degree views across Snowdonia, the Mawddach Estuary, Cardigan Bay, the Llyn Peninsula, and even the distant mountains of Ireland. After this challenging but unforgettable day on the mountain, we’ll return to the hostel for a well earned, hearty dinner.

Sunday – Barmouth Estuary
• Distance: 22km (14 miles)
• Grading: Intermediate/Tough - it's a long hike with hills too
• Ascent: 410m
• Hiking time: 6.5 - 8 hours

Discover the best of coast and countryside on this stunning circular hike to Barmouth.

We’ll set off from the hostel and follow a beautiful trail that brings us to the twin lakes of Llynnau Cregennen, perched high above the Mawddach Estuary. These glacial lakes sit in a spectacular setting, with Cadair Idris towering behind and sweeping views down to the sea. From here our route descends towards the coast, where we cross the famous Barmouth Bridge, a mile-long wooden railway viaduct with a footpath that spans the mouth of the estuary.

On the far side, there’s time to wander through Barmouth, a classic seaside town with a sandy beach and harbour. After exploring, we turn inland to join the Mawddach Trail – a former railway line now transformed into a scenic walking path. This gentle track hugs the estuary back towards Dolgellau, with views of tidal waters, salt marshes and mountain backdrops.

Our circular journey ends as we return on foot to YHA Kings, having completed a wonderfully varied day that combines mountains, lakes, estuary, seaside, and woodland in one memorable loop.

This evening, we have a simple and basic pizza dinner at the hostel.

Monday – Lakes and Ridge Walks
• Distance: 6km (4 miles)
• Grading: Beginner/Intermediate
• Ascent: 130m
• Hiking time: 2 - 3 hours

A gentle day today to relax and see a less known area.

Wander through ancient woods, along scenic ridgelines and through breathtaking valleys. Our hike finishes following the shore of a stunning mountain lake.

Typical finish time: midday/early afternoon, typically 12:30 to 1:30pm, so you have plenty of time for the drive back to London. This marks the end of the organised trip.

    🥾 Hike Description
Our adventure begins in the historic Roman city of Chichester, whose roots stretch back nearly 2,000 years. From here, we set out toward Chichester Harbour, the largest natural estuary in South East England and a protected wildlife sanctuary. The harbour’s expansive tidal waters and saltmarshes are alive with birdlife, making it one of the UK’s richest coastal habitats.

We follow a scenic trail past the Bosham Channel, a picturesque stretch of water that has inspired painters, poets, and writers for centuries. Soon we reach the Chichester Channel, once used as a wartime shipping passage and immortalised in a painting by J.M.W. Turner. Here we cross by the traditional ferry, a unique highlight of the day and a chance to admire the waterway up close.

Arriving in the old village of West Itchenor, our route continues to the bustling Chichester Marina, home to more than 1,000 boats and one of the South Coast’s most vibrant harbours. From here, our path meanders past ancient villages, coastal meadows, and historic sites before concluding with a refreshing visit to a local pub — the perfect way to end this coastal journey.

    Highlights
    • Explore the Surrey Hills AONB, one of England’s most beautiful landscapes
    • Admire far-reaching views from St Martha’s Hill and its 12th-century church
    • Visit Guildford, Surrey’s most significant ancient town with Bronze Age roots
    • Follow the tranquil River Wey, with its boathouses and willow trees

    • Hike part of the North Downs Way, a classic long-distance National Trail
    • Explore the atmospheric remains of the Chilworth Gunpowder Works, founded in 1626
    • See Guildford Castle, built nearly 1,000 years ago

    Hike Description
Our journey begins in the historic town of Guildford, a place of cobbled streets, a Norman castle and a history stretching back to the Bronze Age. Over the centuries it has attracted many famous residents, including Lewis Carroll, Alan Turing, Terry Jones, Yvonne Arnaud and supermodel Jodie Kidd. The artist William Turner painted the nearby ruins of St Catherine’s Chapel in 1807–08, works that now hang in the Tate Gallery.

We start by following the River Wey, a peaceful canal lined with boathouses and willow trees, leading us to the evocative ruins of St Catherine’s Chapel, a 14th-century site perched above the river. From here, our trail rises into the Bluebell Woods before joining the ancient North Downs Way, a ridge path that rewards us with sweeping views across Surrey and, on a clear day, as far as the sea.

At the top of the ridge we reach the remote and atmospheric St Martha’s Church, built in the 12th century and still standing alone on the hilltop. The views here are among the finest in the region, stretching across seven counties and down to the distant South Downs.

From the ridge, we descend towards Chilworth, once home to an extensive gunpowder factory built by the East India Company in 1626. Though production ended in 1920, the enchanting 27-acre site is now a mix of woodland and evocative ruins, including relics, tramways and industrial buildings from its nearly 400-year history. We finish our hike back in Guildford, passing the town’s Norman castle before returning to London.

    🌟 Highlights
    • Hike the most spectacular coastal trail in Southern England — the famous Seven Sisters
    • A great physical challenge with options to self shorten if needed
    • Enjoy breathtaking cliff-top views for much of the hike
    • Pass Birling Gap and the iconic Belle Tout Lighthouse
    • Finish in Eastbourne — England’s sunniest town
    • Explore the South Downs National Park — the newest in the UK

    🥾 Hike Description
This is Outdooraholics’ most popular hike, a dramatic and exhilarating journey across the chalk cliffs of Sussex that we have been leading for over 12 years. The Seven Sisters are a spectacular series of gleaming white chalk cliffs formed at the end of the last Ice Age by glacial meltwater. Erosion has since created an “eighth sister,” and today the cliffs stand as one of England’s most iconic landscapes.

We begin in the coastal town of Seaford, home to a Napoleonic-era Martello Tower built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 coastal defences against French invasion. From here, the trail climbs onto the cliff tops, where for much of the day we walk high above the sea, treated to endless coastal views and fresh sea air.

Our route follows the South Downs Way, passing through Birling Gap and past the striking Belle Tout Lighthouse, famously moved 17 metres inland in 1999 to save it from falling into the sea. The final highlight is Beachy Head, a dramatic beauty spot with sheer chalk cliffs dropping into the sea below.

We finish in Eastbourne, statistically England’s sunniest town, where we celebrate our coastal adventure with refreshments in a local pub.

    Cliffs – danger
There are sheer drops off the cliffs and some of these soft chalk cliffs are crumbling at the edges with chunks regularly falling and no fencing in place. Please keep at least 3 metres away from the edges. If you fall, or the ground at the edge of the cliff collapses it will almost certainly be fatal.

    🥾 Hike Description
We set off from Cookham and soon make our way into the enchanting Bisham Woods, once part of the Royal Forest of Windsor. Steeped in history and folklore, these ancient woods were said to be haunted by Lady Hoby and inspired Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows. Rich in flora and wildlife, they provide a beautiful opening to our walk.

Climbing to Winter Hill, we enjoy sweeping views across the Thames Valley before descending to the river. The path then leads us through meadows and marshland, past the ancient burial mounds of Cock Marsh, before arriving in the historic heart of Cookham village, famously described by Stanley Spencer as “a village in heaven.” Here we pause for lunch, with time to explore the charming streets, Spencer’s gallery, and Holy Trinity Church where the artist is commemorated, as well as a visit to a traditional pub.

After lunch, we rejoin the Thames Path, widely regarded as one of the most photogenic stretches of the river. The route meanders alongside the water, skirting the edge of the grand Cliveden Estate, once a ducal residence and later the setting of the notorious 1960s Profumo Affair.

Our hike continues along the river past Boulters Lock, a lively boating hub once popular with Victorian high society, before reaching Maidenhead. The finale is at Brunel’s magnificent 1835 railway bridge, a pioneering feat of Victorian engineering and a fitting close to a day rich in riverside scenery, history and culture.
