New Years Hiking & Party - Brecon Beacons Mountains in a 5 star hostel barn
For this New Year's holiday we have something really special - we're visiting the Brecon Beacons Mountains for our first New Years here, this trip is a one off - a change from our usual Gower and Isle of Wight destinations
We visit both the most popular and arguably the most undiscovered hike in this National Park.
Our guide Graham knows his area well having spent 4 years living close by and he's done the main hike on this trip over 32 times.
We’ll spend the first day hiking over the mountains that surround the Neuadd reservoir with views to the sea and across the Seven Estuary. Our second day is saved for the beautiful canal and Llangattock Escarpment set behind our hostel, on our third day we visit Sugar Loaf Mountain. We'll also have dinner in the gorgeous setting of our remote converted stone barn - a 5 star rated hostel with ensuite rooms.
A perfect setting for a New Years trip and party as well as time to spend with like minded people. We have a party at the hostel with speakers and disco lights and we will see in the New Year in our barn conversion high in the mountains and enjoy a bonfire outside :-D
HIGHLIGHTS
- Party to see in the New Years in the mountains with a bonfire
- 3 gorgeous and contrasting hikes high in the Brecon Beacons National Park
- Stay in a lovely converted stone barn eco hostel - awarded the Greenest hostel in the UK status in 2013
- A fully catered trip - all meals included
- A closer trip than usual - only about 3 hours driving from London
- Hike the iconic Brecon Beacons Horseshoe
- Enjoy gorgeous scenery passing along the Llangattock Escarpment
- Smaller trip than usual, 30 attendees
WEEKEND DESCRIPTION
The Horseshoe walk is the most popular in the Brecon Beacons and it's easy to see why with staggering views across South Wales to the sea, we also summit 3 mountain peaks. Having hiked the entire National Park extensively, it's the guide's personal favourite. It's fairly tough but offers breath taking views over the flat land to the North and back into the Brecon Beacons mountain range and you can even see the sea and the Gower Peninsula.
We are staying in one of the few 5 star hostels in the UK - a converted stone barn remote in the Brecon Beacons. With an ultra low carbon footprint, this eco hostel has been awarded the Greenest hostel in the UK status in 2013. To fully enjoy our rural mountainous setting and so that everyone can get to know each other, we will be eating at the hostel each evening.
On the second day we hike from the hostel along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal and then up to the escarpment of Llangattock with far reaching views. For convenience we hike straight from the hostel with no driving and finish mid afternoon so we have time to relax and spruce up before our big New Years celebrations tonight.
On the third day we do a shorter hike at the famous Sugar Loaf mountain which we will summit to celebrate New Years day and see in the year.

🥾 Hike Description
We begin by going from Hassocks up onto the South Downs ridge, passing the 200-year-old Clayton windmills, Jack and Jill. Jill was originally built in Brighton and moved here by horses and oxen, while Jack is the only “male” windmill in England. From the ridge the views open wide, stretching inland across the Weald and southwards to the English Channel.
The trail follows the undulating ridge to Ditchling Beacon (248m) — once an Iron Age hill fort and one of the highest points in South East England. In 1588 it formed part of the beacon chain that warned of the Spanish Armada. Today it rewards us with panoramic views across Sussex and the Downs, with the hills rolling away beautifully in every direction.
We continue over gentle peaks before dropping to the River Ouse, which guides us into Lewes. Our finale is a dramatic entrance through the Castle Gate, part of William the Conqueror’s 11th-century fortress. Finishing in this historic market town, we celebrate our day’s journey with the option of a pub visit.

• Hike along the rivers Eden and Medway, through ancient woodlands and rolling countryside
• Explore Tonbridge, a bustling medieval market town
• Pass the impressive 11th-century Tonbridge Castle, England’s finest example of a motte and bailey fortress
🥾 Hike Description
Our journey begins in Tonbridge, where we get views of Tonbridge Castle. This formidable Norman motte and bailey fortress, built in the 11th century beside the River Medway, provides a dramatic start to our day’s hike through one of Kent’s most historic landscapes.
Our route takes us past the village of Leigh and towards Penshurst Place, an extraordinary medieval manor dating from 1341 and one of the most complete examples of 14th-century domestic architecture in England. In Tudor times it became a hunting lodge for Henry VIII, and today it remains an evocative reminder of England’s aristocratic past.
From here, we head into Haysden Country Park, where the trail opens into lush meadows, tranquil woodlands and the gentle hills of the High Weald — a landscape renowned for its rich medieval character and ancient woodland. Following a sunken Saxon drovers’ lane, we trace the footsteps of travellers who once crossed these lands centuries ago, before arriving back in Tonbridge, a market town with medieval origins and once again see the remains of its mighty 11th-century castle.

🌟 Highlights
• Hike through the Surrey Hills AONB (422 km²) — one of England’s most beautiful landscapes
• Visit the famous Box Hill viewpoint with far-reaching views over Surrey and Sussex
• Enjoy varied hiking across woodland, downs and the River Mole
• Visit Denbies Wine Estate — England’s largest vineyard and award winner
• Cross the iconic Stepping Stones on the River Mole
• See the twisting Olympic cycle race roads (2012)
🥾 Hike Description
For centuries, the beauty of Box Hill has inspired artists, writers and musicians. Jane Austen set a scene from Emma here, George Lambert painted it in 1733 (now in Tate Britain), and it has even featured in modern songs. The poet Keats and G.K. Chesterton also drew inspiration from these hills, showing how this corner of Surrey has long captured creative imaginations.
Our hike begins in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with woodland and rolling trails through Norbury Park before joining the twisting roads used in the 2012 Olympic cycling race. From here, we climb to the summit of Box Hill, where the Salomons Memorial viewpoint offers sweeping panoramas across the Weald and as far as Devil’s Dyke by the South Coast. On the way we also encounter traces of history, including a late 19th-century fort built to defend against French invasion and the semi-ruined folly tower from 1815.
After soaking up the views, we descend to the River Mole and cross its famous Stepping Stones, a much-loved landmark of the area. The trail then continues through open chalk downland and woodland before reaching Denbies Wine Estate, the largest vineyard in England, winner of international awards including Best Rosé in the World at the 2010 International Wine Challenge.
A wonderfully varied hike that blends chalk downs, riverside beauty, iconic views and layers of history — all within easy reach of London.

NEW - TOUGH HIKE 21km Challenge - Surrey 2 Peaks 640M ASCENT
Victoria Station, Victoria Station, Victoria, London SW1E 5ND, UK, London, al, GB🌳 Large Group Social Hike
One of our bigger, more sociable hikes.
Prefer a smaller group? See our standard-size hikes.
This is a new hike — a shorter version of our popular Surrey 3 Peaks route, designed especially for the winter months when daylight is limited. Don’t be fooled by the distance though — it’s still a challenging and demanding hike.
Your guide knows this area well and has written this route himself. He was born on the North Downs Way and spent 18 years living in the Surrey Hills — the landscape we’ll be hiking through.
📏 Key Info:
• Distance: 13 miles (21km)
• Grading: Challenging
• Ascent: 640m
• Hiking time: 5 to 5.5 hours
• Cost: £33 (includes guided hike + return train)
• Refunds: Payments are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you follow our [Resale Process] and your place is rebooked, we’ll issue a refund.
• Toilet Breaks: On the train, at the lunch stop, and at the end pub
📍 Meeting Point
• Location: Victoria station. Meet between WHSmith (no 34) and Nero Express (no 29) - MAP
• Time: Meet 8am, leave 8:20am for the 8:41am train
• Return: 5:45pm arrival back in London (you’re committed until then)
🌟 Highlights
• Conquer the two highest peaks in Surrey — Leith Hill (294m) & Holmbury Hill (261m)
• Hike through the Surrey Hills AONB, one of England’s most beautiful landscapes
• See the historic Leith Hill Tower with its sweeping panoramas
• A superb training hike for major challenges (Yorkshire Three Peaks, National Three Peaks, Kilimanjaro, Toubkal, Everest Base Camp etc)
🥾 Hike Description
This is a shorter version of the Surrey 3 Peaks - a formidable challenge often called the Yorkshire cousins as it rivals the Yorkshire Three Peaks in length and ascent. We take on the two highest points in Surrey: Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill, following ancient sandy trails and woodland ridges across the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Surrey is the most wooded county in England, and this route showcases its very best trails.
Starting from Holmwood, our route climbs first to Leith Hill (294m), the highest point in the South East of England. Here the summit is crowned by the 18th-century gothic Leith Hill Tower, offering some of the most far-reaching views of any of our hikes — south to the sea and the South Downs, and north as far as central London landmarks on a clear day.
From there, we continue along sandy trails and woodland ridges to Holmbury Hill (261m), where the remains of an Iron Age fort overlook the forested Weald below.
Toughness (Please Read):
This is a very tough, and hilly hike with over 600m of total ascent. Expect steep sections, some loose ground, and a short section where you need to use your hands it's so steep. The pace will average 4.0–4.4 km/h and the hike will not be slowed down or cut short.
It is not suitable for beginners. Only experienced and fit walkers should join. If a participant is unable to keep pace or complete the hike, there are places they can arrange a taxi to leave the hike. If you have any doubts about your ability, we recommend choosing one of our less demanding hikes instead.
