🥾 Trip Description
There’s no better place to start the New Year than amid the rugged beauty of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with like minded people. Designated in 1952, it remains the only UK National Park created for its coastline — a landscape of turquoise coves, towering cliffs, and timeless fishing villages. Here, 186 miles of coastal paths reveal wildlife-rich coves, sea stacks, and centuries-old tales of mariners and myths.
Our long weekend includes three stunning hikes along this world-renowned coast, combining fresh sea air, dramatic views, and the relaxed atmosphere of a winter escape. We’ll also explore Tenby, a picture perfect harbour town of pastel houses and cobbled streets, where you’ll have time to wander, shop, or grab a seaside lunch.
Back at our exclusively hired hostel, perched just 100 m from the shore, you’ll enjoy hearty meals, good company, and a proper New Year celebration — complete with a disco and drinks to toast the incoming year.
đź“… Itinerary
Wednesday – Arrival
Arrive at our exclusively hired coastal accommodation. Take in the sea air, settle into your room, and meet your fellow hikers over a relaxed evening. The atmosphere is informal - no rush, just good company and excitement for the days ahead.
Thursday – Freshwater East
• Distance: 16km
• Grading: Intermediate
• Ascent: 580m
• Hiking time: 5 – 6 hours
We start the trip with a spectacular clifftop walk westward from YHA Manorbier. The trail follows the Pembrokeshire Coast Path past Manorbier Bay, then climbs over undulating headlands with panoramic views of the wild Atlantic. We stop at Swanlake Bay, one of the area’s most secluded beaches, and continue along rugged cliffs spoilt at every turn by the panoramas.
The terrain is varied, with some short steep climbs that reward us with superb views down the coastline. Our endpoint Freshwater East, boasts sweeping sands and tranquil dunes, a perfect finish to our first day. Back at our hostel, we’ll enjoy a three course dinner followed by a New Year disco and party, dancing late into the night!
Friday – Giltar Point and the islands
• Distance: 16km
• Grading: Intermediate
• Ascent: 290m
• Hiking time: 4 – 5 hours
After last night’s celebration, we’ll enjoy a slightly later start for a more relaxed coastal hike, but it’s still a beautiful one. Our trail starts on the coast and takes us near Lydstep Haven, following the coast past secluded coves and sea caves before reaching the dramatic limestone headland of Giltar Point.
From here, the views are truly breathtaking, across the Carmarthen Bay and out to Caldey Island, home to a working Cistercian monastery. On a clear day, you can even see the Gower Peninsula in the distance. The cliffs here are alive with wildlife, and if we’re lucky, we might spot grey seals basking on the rocks below.
We’ll return in time for a relaxed evening with a basic and light (snack) pizza dinner, with cheese and biscuits. Expect a chilled night of chats and laughter.
Saturday – Tenby Town and Saundersfoot
• Distance: 14km
• Grading: Intermediate
• Ascent: 580m
• Hiking time: 4 – 5 hours
We take a short train ride to Tenby, one of Britain’s most charming seaside towns. Tenby’s pastel coloured Georgian houses, cobbled lanes, and medieval walls make it a photographer’s dream.
Our route follows the coastal cliffs, offering ever changing sea views and glimpses of hidden coves below. The path winds past wide bays and leads us into Saundersfoot where we'll see the town and harbour and have time to enjoy a coffee on the coast.
We return to Tenby and we’ll celebrate our final hike with time to explore the town and harbour - a perfect end to our New Year adventure before heading back to our hostel.
